To improve your golf swing there isn’t one magic bullet, or one piece of information or advice. You must take your golf swing apart, and look at each piece of it and make improvements where you can.

Let’s look at the various parts of the golf swing that you need to consider to improve your golf swing.

1. Setup or Address

Ensuring your setup is correct and the same for every shot is an important element to improve your golf swing. If you aren’t consistent and vary your setup slightly for each shot, you may find that your club face comes through at a slightly different angle every time.

2. Grip

There are basically three different golf grips that you can use. Whichever one you are using, go through and check that everything is by the book. The most important thing to consider is to grip the club lightly. Many players tend to grip the club far too firmly which will not provide the best result. Having a proper golf club grip is the starting point to improve your golf swing.

3. Takeaway

When you start your backswing, make sure that you keep the club head low to the ground. Low and long and slow is the best way to start into your backswing.

4. Backswing

The keys to a good backswing are good body rotation, a smooth movement, and getting your hands and club face set in the right position. At the top of the backswing your back should be facing the target, your hands in a high position with the wrists cocked, and the club face should be in line with the target.

5. Transition to Downswing

Don’t be in a hurry to start the downswing. There should be a slight pause at the top.

6. Downswing

Here is where you get the power into your shot. Power is not strength, but rather the speed that the club head moves. The wrists should remain cocked until you get towards the bottom of the swing. As you straighten the wrists, the club head will come through much faster. Your weight should be transferring to the left foot as you finish the downswing. At the time of contact, you should be square on with the ball.

7. Follow Through

The follow through is often overlooked. Developing a good follow through is vital to improve your golf swing. Make sure you hit through the ball and allow your body to uncoil. Keep your head and eyes down for as long as you can, and at the end of the follow through you should be facing the target.

If you can work through each of these components of the swing and make some corrections, you should be on the way to improve your golf swing.
